Movie Review
Eklavya The Royal Guard is a visually stunning and emotionally gripping film that showcases Vidhu Vinod Chopra's mastery as a filmmaker. The film has a complex and engaging plot that keeps the viewers hooked till the end. The film begins with Eklavya narrating the story of his namesake from the Mahabharata to a child. Eklavya was a low-caste boy who wanted to learn archery from Dronacharya, the guru of the royal princes. But Dronacharya refused to teach him because of his caste. Eklavya then made a clay statue of Dronacharya and practiced archery in front of it. He became so skilled that he surpassed Arjun, Dronacharya's best disciple. Dronacharya then asked Eklavya for his right thumb as his fee, which Eklavya obediently cut off and offered to him. This story illustrates the concept of dharma or sacred duty that Eklavya follows throughout his life.
The film then shifts to contemporary India, where Eklavya is the royal guard of Devigarh, a centuries-old fort in Rajasthan. He has been serving the royal family for nine generations with utmost devotion and loyalty. He is also an expert marksman who can shoot with his eyes closed. He lives only to protect the fort, the dynasty, and the king. But his life changes when he learns that his master, King Jaywardhan (Boman Irani), has been killed by two assassins hired by his own brother Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff). Eklavya kills the assassins but also discovers that they were sent by his own son Udaywardhan (Jimmy Sheirgill), who is Jyotiwardhan's son-in-law.
Eklavya is shocked and heartbroken by this betrayal. He also learns that he is not Udaywardhan's biological father. In fact, he is the biological father of Prince Harshwardhan (Saif Ali Khan), who is Jaywardhan's son and heir. This secret was revealed by Queen Suhasinidevi (Sharmila Tagore) on her deathbed to Harshwardhan, who had returned from London after many years. Harshwardhan had left Devigarh because he was disgusted by his father's tyranny and corruption. He had also fallen in love with Rajjo (Vidya Balan), a local girl who was Eklavya's adopted daughter.
As Eklavya struggles with his dilemma of choosing between his duty and his love for his son, he also faces another threat from Jyotiwardhan and Udaywardhan. They want to usur b70169992d
